Parents often ask Comfort Dental Kids for advice on helping their children establish good oral health care at a young age. Here are three ways to help your child maintain a healthy smile:
- Brush your teeth in front of your child. Children love trying to mimic grown up activities. Show them how you brush your teeth and explain each step of brushing your teeth. Discuss which teeth you are brushing, how you are brushing them and why. Then, have fun brushing together!
- Make brushing fun. These days toothbrushes are pretty fun! Toothbrushes can play music, feature cartoon characters and some even spin. Play your child’s favorite song or video and brush while it plays. The goal is to make brushing fun – not a chore! Sesame Street also has a great brushing video that children love!
- Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle or sippy cup. This can be a tough one, but milk and juice before bed will sit on the teeth and cause tooth decay overnight. And, if you do this every night as a part of a bedtime routine, it can really do a number on your child’s teeth. Refrain from giving children snacks or drinks other than water after they brush their teeth.
